After many experiments with vector illustrations, PVC tape, old doors and digital imagery, I resolved the problem of the book jacket using a Voigtländer Vitomatic IIa 35mm camera (1962) and lots of snow for the backdrop. The un-touched snow had become hardened from many nights of frost and was hard enough to place the camera and its strap-holder on top of it without falling through.
